Era uma vez um pastor que vivia numa aldeia. Todos os dias ia para as serras daquela região com as ovelhas; ia por todas as casas vender o leite e a lã.
Once upon a time there was a shepherd who lived in a village. Every single day he went to the mountains with his sheep.He stopped at every single house to sell milk and wool.
Numa noite, sonhou que uma estrela descia do céu e que lhe disse:
- Caminha até à serra mais alta. Vou ser a tua estrela guia. Vou brilhar mais que as outras estrelas!
One night, he dreamt a star fell down the sky and told him: "Walk till the highest mountain. I'll be your guiding star. I'll shine more than the other stars!"
Passados uns dias, o pastor decidiu subir a serra. As pessoas da aldeia diziam para ele não ir, pois podia-lhe acontecer alguma coisa, mas o pastor estava decidido.
A few days later, the shepherd decided to climb the mountain. The people in his village told him not to go, as something bad could happen to him. But he had already decided to do that. 
Partiu para a serra com a estrela a guiá-lo. O cão não aguentou e morreu pelo caminho. Mas mesmo assim ele continuou a subir. Quando chegou lá acima ficou maravilhado com toda aquela paisagem… aquela terra não tinha fim.
A sua aventura depressa ficou conhecida. O Rei prometeu todas as riquezas ao pastor, em troca da sua estrela. Ele disse-lhe:
-Não quero riquezas, pois tenho esta paisagem para mim todo o dia e à noite, a minha estrela. 
Guided by the star, he went to the mountain. His dog was so tired that it died on the way. Even so, he continued climbing the mountain. When he reached the top of the mountain, he was surprised with the landscape... that land had no end.
His adventure soon became known. The King promised the shepherd all the wealth in return of the star.
The shepherd told him: "I do not want wealth, as I have the landscape for me the whole day and my star during the night."
Passado algum tempo, o pastor morreu. Mas a sua guia lá ficou naquele céu negro e sem fim.
Em sua honra e da sua estrela, a serra passou a chamar-se Serra da Estrela.
Some time later the shepherd died. His guide remained in that dark and endless sky.
To honour him and his star, the mountain was named Serra da Estrela (Mountain of the Star).
