A Lenda da Sopa de Pedra

The story of the stone soup
Once upon a time a friar arrived at a village. He was very tired and hungry. He knocked at the door of an old couple. They were very nice.
The friar showed the nice couple a stone and said,
"I would like to make a soup with this stone."
The couple couldn't believe he was serious.
"With that stone? We don't believe you."
The friar washed the stone and asked the old lady for a pot with water.
"Are you going to make a soup with this stone? Nothing else?", asked the couple.
"No", answered the friar. "I will add oil, meat, beans, potatoes, coriander, cured sausages ..."

_ Então e a pedra???

The soup started boiling and the smell was delicious. When the friar started eating the soup, the couple asked him,
"And, where is the stone?"
"The stone?", asked the friar,
"I will use it again to have another meal!"

A Lenda do Galo de Barcelos

The legend of the cock of Barcelos

Once upon a time, there was a quiet kingdom, nowadays known as the city of Barcelos.
One day the wealth of a rich man was stolen and everyone became suspicious.
That time a boy arrived at the kingdom. He came from Galicia. Everyone accused him of having stolen the rich man's wealth, so he was taken to the house of the judge.

- Deixem-me, não sou o culpado!
When they arrived there, the boy protested his innocence:
"I'm not guilty! You have to believe me."

Toda a gente desatou às gargalhadas e o juiz mandou-o prender.
Before they came in, the judge was about to eat a delicious roast chicken. When they came in, the men told the judge they had found the thief of the wealth of the rich man.
The boy looked around. He saw the cock and said: "If I am innocent, this cock will crow".
There was an outburst of laughter. The judge ordered him to be arrested.

When they returned to the judge's house and were preparing to eat, the cock stood up on the table and crowed. The judge released the boy and sent him on his way in peace.

Lenda de Geraldo Geraldes, o Sem Pavor

The Legend of Geraldo Geraldes

A long time ago there was a city that belonged to the Moors. It was called Yeborath. This city is located on the south of the city of Lisbon.
D. Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal, tried to conquer many lands for his country. He wanted to conquer Yeborath, but it was very difficult because of the walls of the fortress.

One day, a noble man called Geraldo Geraldes heard this story. He was known as "the one without fear" as he was a brave man. He decided to conquer the city. To do that he planned everything carefully.

He disguised himself as a troubadour and started to play some songs by the castle. The guard of the castle fell asleep. He climbed the walls of the fortress and stole the keys of the huge doors. He opened the doors to allow their men to come in. The Moors were surprised and defeated. They conquered the city.

Geraldo Geraldes gave the King of Portugal Yeborath. The King was very happy. As a reward for this event, he gave him the keys of the city and a sword as a symbol of his courage.

The legend of Serra da Estrela

Once upon a time there was a shepherd who lived in a village. Every single day he went to the mountains with his sheep. He stopped at every single house to sell milk and wool.

One night, he dreamt a star fell down the sky and told him: "Walk till the highest mountain. I'll be your guiding star. I'll shine more than the other stars!"

Passados uns dias, o pastor decidiu subir a serra.

A few days later, the shepherd decided to climb the mountain. The people in his village told him not to go, as something bad could happen to him. But he had already decided to do that.

Guided by the star, he went to the mountain. His dog was so tired that it died on the way. Even so, he continued climbing the mountain. When he reached the top of the mountain, he was surprised with the landscape... that land had no end.
His adventure soon became known. The King promised the shepherd all the wealth in return of the star.
The shepherd told him: "I do not want wealth, as I have the landscape for me the whole day and my star during the night."

Passado algum tempo, o pastor morreu.
Some time later the shepherd died. His guide remained in that dark and endless sky.
To honour him and his star, the mountain was named Serra da Estrela (Mountain of the Star).

A Lenda de Coimbra

The Legend of Coimbra

In a kingdom lived a beautiful princess with green eyes, long blond
hair and silky skin. All the boys loved this princess, but she didn't
like them. She fell in love with a knight.

Her father used to say: "You can not be in love with this unknown
knight. He can not marry a princess like you!"
"But I love that knight", the princess said.
One day, a serpent named Colber appeared in the kingdom.

Everyone was scared. The princess thought that was the occasion to solve her
problem.

Foi logo a correr à beira do pai e disse-lhe:
Farei a tua vontade.

She told her father: "Father, tell all the knights in the
kingdom that the one who defeats the serpent, will marry the
princess".
"If that is your will…", answered the King. Everyone in the kingdom
knew that the one who killed the serpent would marry the princess.
Nevertheless, there was no knight in the kingdom with courage and
bravery to kill it. The beloved knight, with great effort, led the
serpent to a cave and lit a fire.

The serpent was suffocating because of the smoke but it was strong enough to fight against the knight. The knight was extremely tired. Suddenly, he stabbed the serpent to death.

The King fulfilled his promised and the knight and the princess lived happily.

This fight was remembered as the Colber fight (Colber Briga), which
originated the name of the city of Coimbra.

A Lenda das Amendoeiras em Flor

The Legend of the Almond Trees

Once upon a time, when the Moors dominated the Algarve, a very hot
land, there was a young King, who fell in love with a beautiful Nordicgirl, who worked in the castle.

Everyday the King went to the kitchenof the castle to see this girl, who started to like the King, as well. Some time later, the King asked her to marry him.

So they did and werevery happy. As time went by, the Queen felt very unhappy. She did not smile or talk.

The King talked to the wise men from his kingdom and asked theiradvice. He organised sumptuous dinners and parties, with the bestmusicians, in her honour but the Queen felt sadder and sadder.

No dia seguinte mandou chamar o melhor poeta do reino.

The next day, he talked to the best poet in the kingdom and he toldthe King that the Queen missed the whiteness of the snow of hercountry.

De imediato o rei teve uma ideia. Mandou plantar muitas amendoeiras por toda a terra do Algarve.

The King ordered his servants to plant almond trees as far as the eyescould reach… And so it was done.

After some time, in a beautifulwinter morning, the King opened the window and called her beloved Queen to see the white and exuberant landscape similar to the one ofher country.

The almond trees in flower, which almost reached thesea, looked like snow. From that day on, the sadness disappeared from the face of the beautiful Queen.

Lenda da Lagoa das Setes Cidades

The Legend of the small lake of the Seven Cities

Once upon a time there was a princess who lived in the kingdom of theSeven Cities. She loved to go for a walk in the hood. One day she sawa flock and said:
"How beautiful these sheep are!"

Com estas palavras o pastor acorda e diz à princesa:
-Quem és tu? O que estás aqui a fazer?
A princesa responde:
-Eu sou a princesa e adoro andar no campo e tu?
-Eu sou o pastor destas ovelhas.
Então eles combinaram ir todos os dias àquele sítio precioso.

She continued her stroll and saw a shepherd.
"These sheep are yours!",the princess said. With these words the shepherd woke up and asked the princess:
"Who areyou? What are you doing here?"
The princess answered: "I am the princess and I love to walk in thecountry. What about you?"
"I am the shepherd of these sheep."
From that day, they met everyday in that same place.

They loved eachother, but nobody knew that. One day the King discovered this secretand forbade the princess to go out with the shepherd.

The princess begged the King: "Please, let me see him for the last time!"
The King said "I will let you go today but then those meetings must end."

The princess met the shepherd and said: "I shall never see you againbecause my father does not want to see us together."
"We will never be together again but I shall love you forever.", saidthe shepherd sadly.
"So shall I.", answered the princess.

They started to cry. They cried so much that they formed a green and a blue lake, the colour of their eyes, and stayed together forever. This is how the wonderful small lake of the Seven Cities, in SãoMiguel Island, in Azores, was formed.
